<image:caption>Above: This is the beach where I found enough sea glass to make my latest painting, and after all that bending down, my back sure needed a good rest! Still it didn't stop me from going out the next day and finding more sea glass. Along with the sea glass, I used old shell and bead necklaces and some 15 year old scallop shells I had laying around from beach days with the kids.</image:caption>

I made a LOT of process videos, some time lapse and some real-time, and maybe I will put the movie together while I'm on our 4 day road trip to Ontario (2 days there, 2 days back).</image:caption>

      <image:title>Upcycling Art - Button Bird Landscape</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was a bit of a struggle as I attempted to flatten the background texture (from a washed and separated bathroom poof). Glue and weights and time made it as flat as possible and when it was finally all dry, I got to paint away! The "birds" are little buttons painted with mirror paint. 20 x 24 inches, (51 x 61 cm), mixed media on canvas, floating frame  </image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece has an underlying texture of feathers, then a layer of chains were glued on top of that and then I added beads during the lengthy painting process. It amazes me that these pieces have a successful end because sometimes I feel like I'm working blindfolded. 20 x 24 inches, (51 x 61 cm), mixed media on canvas, floating frame  </image:caption>

<image:caption>I was cutting out hundreds of letters for a children's project and when I saw the pile of leftover pieces, I knew I could make a very interesting textured surface with the remains. I love recycling! This bas-relief is painted with reflective colours of silver, gold, bronze, brass, etc., and has a thousand faces depending on your position near the painting and the light levels. It's another piece that must be experienced to reveal it's true beauty! 20 x 24 inches, (51 x 61 cm), mixed media on canvas, floating frame  </image:caption>

      <image:title>Upcycling Art - Radiant Chains of Love</image:title>
<image:caption>After using up most of my old jewellery on my bas-relief paintings, I had to buy bags of old jewellery from second hand stores. I'd make some good finds but some stuff was just designed for the round file. One happy day I was in a store that happened to be selling out some of their stock, and buying a few dollars worth of discounted beads and chains, I also quickly mentioned that I put jewellery on paintings. They then pulled out a box of their leftover stock from under the counter and offered it to me - free! This is what you're seeing on "Radiant Chains of Love". This painting, along with most of my bas-reliefs, is a "must see in person" piece of artwork. <image:caption>I discovered a collection of souvenir spoons in a second-hand store on one of my texture hunts, and a year later got inspiration for their application on this upcycled painting. There are also jewellery chains and round bracelets keeping the spoons company. You'll have to figure out on your own why I called it the "Bird of Paradise" - unless you read my blogs. :) This painting, along with most of my upcycled artwork, is a "must see in person" piece as the colours and textures in different environments make it "living" art. 20 x 24 inches, (51 x 61 cm), mixed media on canvas, floating frame.  </image:caption>

<image:caption>My husband teaches at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) and one day he brought me a handful of old-fashioned brass printing letters. Thank you Michael! So I decided to see how big of a crossword puzzle I could make from them. And as usual, I didn't discover until near the completion of the painting that I had a playful message between lovers! (translation, "Call me. When? Now! Ok, Bye). Boop is one side of a lovers good bye, Beep is the other side (not seen in the painting). I used a lying down 3 for a "w", a backwards 4 for an "A", an upside down L for an "r", etc., to make the words I needed. The textures in the background are mostly beads from old necklaces and dried leaves from my garden, all embedded with copious amounts of glue, medium and paint. 20 x 24 x 2 inches, (51 x 61 x 5 cm), mixed media on board, painted edges. $1200.00 Canadian - plus shipping. <image:title>Upcycling Art - Miscellaneous Cutlery</image:title>
<image:caption>I began this piece by cutting an old tablecloth to size and gluing it on the canvas. Then I used glue and molding paste to attach the utensils (which I flattened as much as possible with a table vice). When all was dry, I painted the whole thing white with a couple of coats of gesso, not at all knowing that I was going to be painting the utensils to look like themselves!! That's what I love about abstract art - you never know what you're going to get! This painting, along with most of my bas-reliefs, is a "must see in person" piece of artwork. <image:title>Upcycling Art - Miscellaneous Jewellery</image:title>
<image:caption>Again, this was a time consuming project of arranging, gluing and using molding paste to attach my items. A lot of this jewellery came from my own stash but the watches came from a lovely neighbour Emily Crumback (Thanks Emily!). After everything has dried, I paint it all with gesso and then look for what wants to happen as I apply layer after layer of colour. This painting, along with most of my bas-reliefs, is a "must see in person" piece of artwork. <image:title>Upcycling Art - How Many Things Can You Name?</image:title>
<image:caption>This was actually my first miscellaneous painting. I searched through my kitchen drawers for odds and ends - things that I didn't want to throw out because they might be useful "one day" - you know what I'm talking about. After playing with the arrangement of objects, I sewed and glued and added molding paste, covered it all with gesso and began with my colours. This piece has gone through 3 different "final" painting processes to get to the finish line. This painting, along with most of my bas-reliefs, is a "must see in person" piece of artwork. <image:title>Upcycling Art - Jewellery Boxes</image:title>
<image:caption>The process of placing earings and necklaces onto this canvas was a fun and interesting discovery of which pieces were wanting to play together. But the colour application was a challenging light/dark push/pull lengthy activity - until I got to my happy place. <image:caption>The recycled material in this bas-relief is minimal; I used a crocheted sweater along with my usual experimentation layers of paint. Below the beautiful "designer plant" is a layer of multi-coloured rectangles which were my first attempt at finding the right treatment for this unusual texture. <image:title>Upcycling Art - Mom-Daughter Luncheon</image:title>
<image:caption>This was a piece I did during an emotional time, but I had no idea what was happening. The only thing I knew was that for this project I wanted to experiment with broken glass - I did not make the association with my emotional state at the time. As was normal for one of my abstracts, I found small table coverings - doilies this time and adorned them with Miscellaneous items like jewellery, coins and keys. Not until I was completely finished did the story come together of a mother and daughter - having lunch - but not being able to communicate, except for crying. This painting, along with most of my bas-reliefs, is a "must see in person" piece of artwork. I enjoy the analogy of "precious jewels" to "God's people". God calls us His precious jewels and I've found that one of the pleasure of jewels is their individuality and uniqueness. I'm sure God enjoys that quality in us, and the miracle is that arranged together, He has the ability to make a beautiful image to represent Him. mixed media on canvas. I love acrylic paint and mediums for my art, because they dry quickly and I can change my mind any time I need to. Lots of (fake) pearls on this one, pieces of copper wire and home made crystals (made by my daughter Christel). <image:caption>Like me, you may have purchased a set of little fake candles for Christmas, they lasted a few years and then since all the batteries died, my husband recommended I toss them. I had to save what I could to add to a canvas and this canvas shows the fun I had. A friend named this piece, "Congregation" and it resonated with me so much that I decided it would forever be the title. <image:title>Medium sized Heirloom Paintings - "Fruit Bearing Tree"</image:title>
<image:caption>This jewel painting was inspired by a jumbled string of broken beads which I cut up and laid on the canvas in a grid (my typical approach). But when I swung my chair around - OH NO - it caught the beads and pulled them off to the side of the canvas! When I saw it though, it turned out to be the opposite of a disaster - I liked it! So I developed it, painted it, added small glass beads, painted some more and finally added large glass 'stones'. It became a texture washed by the sand of the sea. 9" x 12" (23 x 30.5 cm), mixed media on canvas. Contact me to BUY IT NOW</image:caption>

<image:title>Medium sized Heirloom Paintings - Born of the Spirit</image:title>
<image:caption>Many stages of growth brought this lovely painting to it's final state. The inspiration for the title is from this verse in John 3:8 – The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. This is exactly how I feel as I travel through the process of my paintings - I have no idea how it's going to end up, I just know when it's not where it's supposed to be. There are a lot of stunning structures to see along the way and this collection of white buildings was one of them. And surprise - the sky was blue! (an unusual sight for us during our trip). This is a textured painting; I used burlap for the buildings and cardboard for the bushes along the road, so they would even to the same level as the burlap. 16 x 20 mixed media on canvas</image:caption>

<image:caption>This bas-relief gave me the most trouble of any painting I've ever done! It is not available for sale, having 5 final stages over a two year process. Image shows the first stage which obviously no longer exists. The underlying texture is part of a Persian lamb coat with LEDs running across it on a diagonal. 20 x 24 inches, (51 x 61 cm), mixed media on canvas   _________________________________________________________</image:caption>

<image:caption>I had some leftover fiberglass from an ancient project and loved the texture potential, so despite the "bitey-ness" of it, I managed to wrestle it to the board and start painting. Soon I discovered a tree trunk on the side of a hill, standing in a corner of a sun-lit meadow. 10 x 24 inches (25 x 61 cm), mixed media on board, 240.00 This painting, along with most of my bas-reliefs, is a "must see in person" piece of artwork. <image:title>Odds and Ends - Memorial to my Mother</image:title>
<image:caption>My mother had brought me a beautiful embroidered tablecloth from Germany but years passed, we moved, and the colours no longer suited anything I had. I didn't want to throw it away, so I glued it to this large canvas, let it dry, gessoed it and had fun painting with textures. Now it remains as a memorial to the time mom gifted it to me. 32 x 38 inches, (81 x 97 cm) mixed media on canvas, 1,200.00 painted edge.

<image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - Radiant Chains of Love</image:title>
<image:caption>A friend dropped off a bag full of glass and pottery tiles a few years ago, and I recently came across them in some dark corner of my studio. They were very challenging to work with and hours of working on this project almost wore off my personal fingerprints! I used mostly gold and silver paint, and Xylotol for texture! 20 x 24 inches, (51 x 61 cm), mixed media on board, painted edge.  </image:caption>

<image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - Bird of Paradise</image:title>

<image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - Miscellaneous Cutlery</image:title>
<image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - Miscellaneous Jewellery</image:title>
<image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - How Many Things Can You Name?</image:title>
<image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - Jewellery Boxes</image:title>
<image:caption>The process of placing earings and necklaces onto this canvas was a fun and interesting discovery of which pieces were wanting to play together. But the colour application was a challenging light/dark push/pull lengthy activity - until I got to my happy place. This painting, along with most of my bas-reliefs, is a "must see in person" piece of artwork. <image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - Oriental Plant</image:title>
This painting, along with most of my bas-reliefs, is a "must see in person" piece of artwork. <image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - Mom-Daughter Luncheon</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece is made of a lot of small necklaces and chains, along with other beaded embellishments. <image:caption>This piece came about as I tried to apply 20 identical sports team pins to my canvas. <image:caption>If you watch the video of the making of this piece (see Process Videos in the menu), you'll notice it two major stages - ending up not at all as it started out. <image:caption>This piece had a long process (like most of my artwork), but it's the only way I can discover what works best for each individual work of art. I love acrylic paint and mediums for my art, because they dry quickly and I can change my mind any time I need to. Lots of (fake) pearls on this one, pieces of copper wire and home made crystals (made by my daughter Christel). <image:title>Why I started Making OLD PG - "Fruit Bearing Tree"</image:title>

Another in my series of small Heirloom Art Pieces (Jewel Paintings), which are all 9" x 12" (23 x 30.5 cm), mixed media on canvas. Contact me to BUY IT NOW</image:caption>

<image:caption>I'd found a beautiful silk scarf (from Talbot) in a second hand store and was determined to create an art piece with it - it was so lovely! I assure you when I got around to this creation, it was not easy to pour glue on, and cut the scarf! <image:caption>I buy bags of junk jewellery wherever I can and on opening one of my treasure sacks, I found a yellowish brown fish necklace. It wasn't very appealing to look at but an image popped into my mind and I was off to create this piece.
