Paintings - landscape, acrylic, abstract, nature, beautiful
It was a bright sunny and wet morning on the water at beautiful Mavillette beach. I loved the bright colours of the fall grasses, they really weren’t that yellow, but that was my internal perception.

Sand beaches are ever changing; I love the undulating shapes created by the wind and the waves. Two years after we visited this beach, it was different again!

We stayed at a cottage for a week on this beautiful dark sandy beach. This is a very typical scene in our Nova Scotia of many varied beaches - white sand, red sand, smooth pebbles, large stones, shells, etc.

There are two beautiful drives to Peggy's Cove from where we live and both are a leisurely 40 minutes long from our house. More often than not, the weather provides us many a stunning view.

We visited the Public Gardens in the late afternoon and just managed a quick visit with a few photographs. We had to leave at dusk, but these magnolias singing for attention, caught the camera and I couldn't help preserve the moment.

This, again, is a beautiful summer scene of the coast of Nova Scotia. A friend took the photo and granted me the privilege of painting the pic.

This is a painting on board of the lighthouse in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. There's so much beauty in winter that I just have to capture it; living in Canada makes it almost impossible not to do winter paintings!
12 x 20.5 inches (52 x 30.5 cm) acrylic on board $950
Every season is lovely in Nova Scotia, even the winter creates stunning scenes. Here, an old dilapidated fence (since taken down), draws you down to the part-frozen, part-open and dark, part-sandbar and then lighter open water of the ocean.

There's a high look-off point along the drive towards Blomidon; the view is always worth stopping for. It looks over the land reclaimed from the sea by the Acadians via dykes in the 1700's.

In this personal challenge to draw 30 trees in 30 days, I began with pencil sketches (sometimes taking 5 hours and more per drawing!!) and as the month wore on, I tried to be a little more efficient with my time; I did a tree in 10 minutes and then one in 10 seconds! When I was craving colour, I did some long and short sketches on my iPad.

I began my 30 day challenge in a faint hearted manner, with little confidence; I did a lot of erasing on this one to get the proportions close. Here's a link to more info about the Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, Nova Scotia: (original is SOLD)

6 Trees for my 6th tree drawing are survivors from Hurricane Juan. It was an eerie scene when we visited Point Pleasant Park not long after the storm; 3/4 of the park's majestic trees were felled by the strong winds. I was happy to memorialize this scene before the dead trees were cut down.

I was in the famous new glass library of downtown Halifax and while I was waiting for my daughter, I went to the 5th floor and sat down. Right in front of me, down on the street was a tree in the sun, begging to be drawn. So I began ... (but didn't finish)

I've always found rock formations of any shape and size to be fascinating. Living in Guelph, Ontario and often travelling to Northern Ontario on vacation, as well as living and travelling in Nova Scotia have given me opportunity to photograph hundreds, maybe thousands of rock formations. They are another aspect of God's amazing handiwork!
My oil pastel stick collection is pretty colourful (I don't have any greys), so I try to "mix" the pastels to approach the colours I see in the rocks. What results is a delightful dance of colour - which sometimes makes the rocks look like they're singing too!
These Oil Pastel Drawings are all 9 x 12 inches (23 x 30.5 cm) in size - made using high quality oil pastels (Holbein) on very heavy Arches watercolour paper.

Who doesn't love flowers?
Many of these flowers are from my own garden but we also have a beautiful park in downtown Halifax called the Public Gardens. A few of my flower inspirations come from my uncle's gardens.
Wherever they are, flowers always bring a sense of peace and joy, that's what I hope my flower artworks will bring to you as well.
There are many varieties of magnolias in the Public Gardens in downtown Halifax. This is one.

We were walking down the street in a major city near a market and I saw these guys playing this game on the sidewalk. We had to go around them to continue on, so as we passed I snapped a photo nonchalantly - no one noticed, the game was not disturbed.
__________________________________________________________
Another sidewalk shot, this boy was magically sleeping on a motorcylce. As I painted the scene I imagined that the young boy was "babysitting" the bike for his dad or more likely his uncle while picking up a bike part - since we were in the motorbike shopping zone.
__________________________________________________________
These tricycles amazed me - I'd never seen such a vehicle before, but they were slightly reminiscent of the tricycles we rode as children. I thought it was a marvellous idea for this farming city of Zhumadian; the roads were flat and the speeds were slow. People took their children to school in them, they carried groceries in them, they moved construction materials and they sold their produce from them as they parked on the sidewalk.
Another use for the "Chinese Tricycle" - carrying large bamboo sticks.
Who could resist taking a photo of this little girl? I never stopped anybody on the street, I just took photos as I walked by.
The Chinese people are very industrious. This is a job for some people - they travel from apartment buildings to shops to dumps looking for useful recyclable materials. Then they go and sell them to the factories that need them.
And yet another use for the adaptable Chinese Tricycle - a taxi.
I never had a chance to ride the tricycle rickshaw, but we did ride in a motorized one. You'll see a motorized tricycle with a wagon on it a few pics down.
A large collection of bonsai trees resided in this large garden park. It has old style buildings in it and they allow some older people to live in this park if they help a little with the gardening. I think this is one of the lucky older men who got to live amongst the beautiful trees and flowers.
An ingenious contraption to encourage an active lifestyle, no? I'm sure it would not be allowed in Canada due to all the moving parts where little hands and feet could get caught.
This looked so odd to me; I thought for sure the box would go tumbling off the back of the wagon as soon as he rounded the corner. This is one reason the traffic moves very slowly I suppose.
While my husband and I were riding in a motorized rickshaw; I had the perfect opportunity to take a shot of this motorbike which was going slightly faster than we were. At the time, I hadn't realized the boy has his tongue out - but that gave me the title for the painting as I imagined this boy had just gotten his hair cut and to make the trip worthwhile, his mom and aunt took him through store after store after store.
I just really liked this shot of an older man riding in the sunshine through a busy and colourful market.
I really liked this photo of an older woman selling her vegetables and also showing off her white legs. It looks a little strange since her arms and face are so dark from years of working in the fields. But she's a pleasant and happy woman. I did a study of her face, you can see it below.
The driver of this tractor was just as surprised to see me as I was to see him driving down a city street with bails of wheat on the back of his wagon!
This was my first acrylic painting after we came back from China. I had done a few oils, but dove into this acrylic because a cousin of my husband's was wanting learn to paint and I was going to paint with her - and she wanted to paint in acrylic!
I decided to incorporate some texture into this painting, which I always enjoy because of the depth. I used molding paste on the pedals and paper towels soaked with glue for the lower leaves.
18 x 24 inches, acrylic on board.
Michael and I were traveling via a fast train from one city to the next and I was holding down the button on my camera so it would continually take photos. This was not a time to enjoy the scenery, it was flying by so quickly!
When I looked at the photos afterwards I found this river divided almost equally in two with an interesting scene on both sides of it. And when I painted them both, stories came to light of the local Chinese lifestyle. Almost every spare piece of land was farmed for vegetables and locals would come down to the river to either tend to the gardens, or wash, or take a walk, or meet and kiss.

This was another "fly-by-shooting" with my camera. I enjoyed the grey skies with the parallel line of foggy trees in the distance, and the angled lines of the wires.
18 x 24 inches, acrylic on canvas
The painting I did of this woman sitting on her tricycle wagon was a challenge for me, her face was so small but there was so much character detail I felt I wanted to get in. So I did this 12 x 12 inch acrylic on panel to be able to do her beautiful face justice.
These are some of the pieces I made around the 4th year of my time at the University of Guelph (1976-1980) where I received my honours degree in Fine Arts.
